Partial Hip Replacement
Partial Hip Replacement Hip is a ball & socket joint. In a total hip replacement surgery, both the ball and the socket are replaced with prostheses. In a partial hip replacement surgery, only the femoral head (the upper part of the thigh bone) or the ball is replaced with an artificial implant.
Partial hip replacement is also known as hip hemiarthroplasty. In general, patients who are recommended partial hip replacement do not have underlying hip arthritis & have a healthy cartilage. It is often in case of patients who have injured or fractured the femoral neck due to a fall.
There are four types or grades of fractured neck of femur which help understand the extent of damage to the hip joint. These are as follows :
Type 1: It is sort of a stable fracture with bones pressed together but not disconnected. Their alignment too is not affected much.
Type 2: The bones are fractured but the alignment is intact
Type 3: This is an advanced stage where bones are displaced but there is contact between bone fragments
Type 4: The bones are completely displaced & there is no contact between bone fragments.
In the first three types, the fracture can be healed with nailing devices & pins. In the last stage of femoral neck fracture, pins or nailing devices are not helpful. Further the blood supply to femoral head may get disrupted leading to early bone death. To treat this, the doctors recommend partial hip replacement surgery.
Partial hip replacement surgery is a treatment for broken hip and not for patients with degenerative conditions like hip arthritis.
Individuals who need a partial hip replacement surgery often experience the following symptoms:
- Persistent pain in the hip
- Pain that gets worse while walking or bending
- Suspected fracture in the hip joint
- Limited or restricted range of motion
Potential complications of a partial hip arthroplasty include:
- Dislocation of prostheses
- Infection
- Loose implants
