Foot Pain The foot consists of 26 bones connected by numerous joints, muscles, tendons & ligaments. It is one of body’s most complex parts. It is susceptible to many stresses & injuries which can lead to pain, swelling & restricted mobility. Foot pain can refer to discomfort or pain in one or more parts of the foot such as : toes, heels, soles & arches.
Foot pain may occur either due to a medical condition or lifestyle choices. Here’s a list of some of the most common causes of foot pain.
Lifestyle choices may include wearing shoes that do not fit right, wearing high heeled shoes. These can put great pressure on the toes. High impact exercises like intense aerobics or jogging can also cause foot pain.
Common medical conditions that cause foot pain are as follows.
Arthritis is one of the most common causes of foot pain. There are 33 joints in the foot & arthritis can affect any of them.
Diabetes too can cause major complications & several problems in the feet. Diabetic patients are more likely to experience nerve damage in the feet, foot ulcers or sores, clogged arteries.
Foot pain is also likely to occur in individuals who are obese, pregnant or have had a foot injury.

In most cases, foot pain can be easily managed at home. However in some cases, you SHOULD consult an orthopedic immediately.

Treatment for foot pain depends on what is causing the pain. In most cases, pain medications can help. In others, the following may be required:

- Physiotherapy or
- Surgery
Here are a few tips that can help prevent chronic foot pain:
- Choose comfortable & roomy shoes
- Avoid high heels & shoes with narrow toe areas
- Maintain ideal bodyweight
- Stretch your toes before workout
- Practice good foot hygiene
