Hip Pain Often referred to as the ball & socket joint, the hip is a stable & strong joint. Off all the different types of joints, Hip Joint gives the most movement. It is held together by muscles & secured by strong cords known as tendons. These muscles & tendons, which form a capsule, support the movements of the hip. They help move the hip joint & support the lower & upper body movement as well.
Synovium keeps the cartilage healthy by lubricating the hip joint with synovial fluid. The cartilage is located between the bones of the hip joint. Its role is to keep the joints from rubbing together & reduce the impact when one walks or moves one’s hip.
Despite all this support & durability, the hip joint is not indestructible. Degeneration causes cartilage to wear down & be damaged. Muscles & tendons can deteriorate due to overuse. Bones may break due to a fall or an accident. Any of these can lead to pain in the hip.

Common Causes of Hip Pain:

Some of the conditions that cause Hip pain are:

Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis & osteoarthritis are the two most common causes of hip pain in adults above the age of 45. These conditions can lead to inflammation in the hip joint & eventually breakdown of the cartilage that cushions your hip bones.

Hip fractures

With age, bones get severely weakened & are likely to lead to a break during a fall.

Bursitis

Bursae are sacs of liquid between bone, muscles & tendons. Their role is to ease friction from these tissues rubbing together. Inflammation of bursae can cause pain

Tendinitis

Tendinitis is the inflammation or irritation of the tendons. It is often a result of repetitive stress or overuse.

Muscle or tendon strain

Repeated activities puts strain on the muscles, tendons & ligaments surrounding the hips. Inflammation due to overuse can cause hip pain & prevent the hip from working normally.

Labral tear

This is a common injury in athletes who perform repetitive twisting movements .

Cancers

Primary bone tumours (Tumours that start in the bone) or secondary bone tumours (that spread to the bone) can cause pain in the hip

Avascular necrosis

This leads to slow down of blood flow to the hip bone causing death of the bone tissue. It can lead to hip fracture or dislocation.
