Wrist Arthroplasty
Wrist Arthroplasty Wrist replacement surgery, also known as wrist arthroplasty, is a procedure done to replace the joint that connects the hand to the arm. This joint is called the radiocarpal joint. The goal of this procedure is to help the patient get relief from pain while also enhancing the range of motion in the wrist. On an average, the new wrist joint can last anywhere between 12 to 15 years.
The wrist is complex joint which contains many small bones. The 4 Carpal bones connect the end of the forearm to the hand. Beyond the carpal bones are metacarpals which connect the wrist to the fingers.
The two bones of the forearm, radius & ulna connect with the first row of carpal bones & are crucial in flexing & extending the wrist. The joint between radius & ulna known as the distal radioulnar joint is crucial for forearm rotation.
Wrist arthroplasty is often the last treatment option recommended for patients with wrist pain. It is considered when all non surgical treatments such as the following have not provided any relief to the patient.

Wrist joint replacement surgery is often performed by a skilled & experienced Orthopedic Surgeon. The procedure can take upto 2 hours.
Prior to the surgery, the patient is given anesthesia through the IV. An incision is made on the top part of the wrist and the joint is removed. The damaged cartilage & bone may also be removed. After the removal, the implants are inserted & are attached to the bones on either side of the joint with pins, screws & bone cement. The surgeon ensures that the artificial joint is secure & is in place and ensures that surrounding tissues are set in place. The incision is closed with stitches & the wrist is wrapped in sterile bandages & a splint.
